Our Mission

The mission of the Joseph Denis Thomas Foundation is dedicated to empowering the Haitian people to reverse the economic, environmental and social effects of deforestation.  The foundation will advance higher education to enable Haitians to find inventive and effective ways of reclaiming Haiti’s beautiful landscape, find alternate fuel sources, diminish the devastating effects of soil erosion, and lead healthy productive lives.

The vision of the Joseph Denis Thomas Foundation is that within 25 years, Haitians will engage in the development and conservation of natural resources such as forests, lands or wildlife, for the benefit of the community.  We envision a Haiti that has begun to implement effective urban planning, reduced the vulnerability of the environment to natural disasters, reduced poverty through increasing food production and enhanced tourism, and implemented alternative fuel sources.

Vision Goals:

Protect the environment — work to protect the forests, implement an agro-reforestation program, manage the watershed systems and rehabilitate the farmland of Haiti.

Build a community that understands the impact of environmental degradation on health — educate Haitians to live healthy lives while being mindful of the fuel, food and water they use and educate Haitians on the interrelation of population, health, and the environment.

Transform the economy — improve Haitian quality of life by increasing local food production, and fostering tourism.
